On the one hand, through the continuous interplay of his roles as Teacher, Writer, and Seeker, alternatively regarded as profession and vocation, Cărtărescu rewrites his own biography in order to dispose of any trace of institutionalised ‘literature’ in his discourse on the other hand, the Romanian author ostentatiously exhibits his own marginal geo-cultural status, implying that it would grant him access to a more authentic and substantial understanding of life. After a short presentation of the theoretical framework and the evolution of Cărtărescu’s career, my approach turns to the hybrid nature of Solenoid, which reveals the complex (meta)narrative strategy its author deploys in order to attain an ever more prestigious position within the international literary canon. ![]() To this end, I will use a specific extension of career construction theory in the field of literary research that focuses on the notion of a ‘late-career novel’. ![]() This essay analyses the most recent novel of Romanian author Mircea Cărtărescu (Solenoid, 2015). ![]() ![]() The trouble, says Mukherjee, is that we are going to encounter this sort of thing increasingly often as our ability to unravel the DNA of our fellow citizens becomes more powerful. Put that way, the notion looks unpleasant. ![]() To his credit, Mukherjee is suspicious of the ethics of a scheme whereby an authority, having genotyped children in a particular area, could then be allowed to choose who is worthy of the attention of the best teachers and the most resources and who is not. The idea of a resilience gene has since taken root, leading psychologists to propose that susceptible short-variant children – the worst behaved but better at responding to counselling – be targeted for scarce and costly intervention. “It is as if resilience itself has a genetic core,” says Mukherjee in this broad-ranging guide to modern genetics and its impact on life. That grim start to life was not quite so hopeless as it seemed. They found the former group, while more prone to antisocial behaviour, was also more likely to react positively to counselling. ![]() But the researchers went further, providing counselling for short-variant binge drinkers and long-variant “normals” to see how each group responded to help from others. ![]() Combine a deprived background with a set of “bad” genes and your chance in life was doomed, it appeared. Sure enough, the scientists found that possessors of short variants were more likely to binge drink, use drugs and be sexually permissive. ![]() ![]() There could be a great inducement to marriage. The child's parents would have better treatment from the rich and the landlords. It has been said that a mother could get eight shillings net profit by selling her one-year old baby. ![]() This proposal makes the children beneficial to the public. It can prevent the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents and country. In a way, ironically, Swift deserves his right to have his statue set up as a preserver of the nation because of his modest proposal. He intends with the proposal to provide for the children of professed beggars and also to support rich people, landlords, and others who expect much from the poor people of Ireland. Swift proposes a way to tackle the miseries of the poor children and their parents. It is very cruel and dangerous satire on the politics of the Great Britain. Though there is the word "modest" in the title, it is not so. With bitter irony, Swift presents a modest proposal. ![]() They were looking for ways of getting rescued from their grievance. Natives of Ireland were much worried about their future. A newly born child was an additional grievance. They were also burdened to their country. ![]() ![]() ![]() The most successful of these is Svengali, whose supernatural powers enable him to dominate and ultimately destroy her. ![]() It is the story of Trilby O’Farrell, a young, promiscuous free-spirit in 1850s bohemian Paris and the men who want to control her. Issued as a book in the US on 8 September 1894, it sold 100,000 copies in a month within five months, 200,000. First serialised in Harper’s Magazine beginning in January 1894, it added 100,000 to the magazine’s circulation before its second instalment. Svengali is one of those rare literary creations that becomes shorthand for a kind of behaviour: in this case, mesmeric control over another. He originated in George du Maurier’s novel Trilby. Whenever Dominic Cummings makes the headlines, commentators reach for the same word to describe his relationship with the prime minister: he is Boris Johnson’s Svengali. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1957 he published his first non-fiction, philosophical book, Dialogi (Dialogues), one of his two most famous philosophical texts along with Summa Technologiae (1964). His works were widely translated abroad (although mostly in the Eastern Bloc countries). Lem became truly productive after 1956, when the de-Stalinization period led to the "Polish October", when Poland experienced an increase in freedom of speech. Translations of his works are difficult and multiple translated versions of his works exist. They are sometimes presented as fiction, but others are in the form of essays or philosophical books. His works explore philosophical themes speculation on technology, the nature of intelligence, the impossibility of mutual communication and understanding, despair about human limitations and humankind's place in the universe. ![]() In 1976, Theodore Sturgeon claimed that Lem was the most widely read science-fiction writer in the world. He is perhaps best known as the author of Solaris, which has twice been made into a feature film. His books have been translated into 41 languages and have sold over 27 million copies.
